First-Hand Production Tutorial
How to Create Custom Clack Fans Using DTF Transfers: Step-by-Step
Clack fans are a fun product, but they're not a simple flat surface — the fabric is mounted on ribs, curved, and meant to fold. Decorating one well takes more than printing a transfer and pressing it down. Here's the real, first-hand process iHeartCustoms developed and used to decorate custom clack fans with DTF, personalize them with UV DTF, and match each one to its own velvet case.
Watch the DTF Clack Fan ProcessThree Decoration Applications in One Project
This process combines three separate decoration applications into one coordinated merchandise program: DTF on the polyester fan fabric, UV DTF on the hard fan ribs, and DTF on the velvet bags. Here's how each step works.
- Remove the polyester fan fabric from the fan ribs. The fabric panel needs to come off the rib structure before it can be properly decorated.
- Heat press the removed fabric to flatten it. This creates a flat, workable surface for printing and pressing.
- Print an oversized DTF transfer sized for the full polyester fan panel.
- Position and align the transfer over the flattened polyester fabric.
- Secure the transfer with heat-resistant tape to hold alignment during pressing.
- Heat press the DTF transfer onto the polyester material following standard DTF pressing procedure for the material.
- Carefully remove the heat tape once pressing is complete.
- Delaminate and peel the DTF carrier film according to the transfer's peel requirements.
- Manually cut the decorated fabric back to shape, following the curved profile of the original fan panel.
- Reattach the finished fabric to the fan ribs using fabric tape.
- Quality check the assembled fan and trim or adjust the material as needed.
- Apply DTF decoration to the velvet fan bags to match the fan's branding.
- Use UV DTF to personalize the front fan ribs with custom names or impressions.
- Match each personalized fan to its corresponding velvet bag.
- Perform final quality control before completion and delivery.
Note: Specific pressing temperatures, dwell times, and peel conditions vary by material and equipment, so this walkthrough describes the process rather than exact settings.
Working on a custom fan project or another product that needs to be taken apart and reassembled to decorate properly? iHeartCustoms can help evaluate the right approach.
Discuss Your Custom Fan ProjectWhy This Process Exists
A clack fan isn't a flat product, which is exactly why this process breaks the job into removal, flattening, decoration, reassembly, and personalization instead of trying to decorate the fan while it's still mounted on its ribs. This workflow was developed for a real project — custom clack fans built for PRA and MARITZ at Conrad Orlando at Evermore, decorated with DTF after that method was tested and confirmed against sublimation for this specific application. You can read the full project story in our PRA x MARITZ case study, and see how that decoration-method decision was made in our DTF vs. sublimation comparison.

Contact iHeartCustomsFrequently Asked Questions
Can you use DTF on a polyester clack fan?
Yes. In a documented project, DTF was used to decorate the polyester fabric panel of a custom clack fan after the fabric was removed from the fan ribs and flattened for printing.
Can you DTF a clack fan without taking it apart?
In the documented process, the polyester fabric was removed from the fan ribs before decoration so it could be properly flattened and pressed, then reattached to the ribs afterward.
Can DTF be applied to velvet fan bags?
Yes. In this project, the velvet fan bags were decorated and personalized using DTF, matching the presentation of the fans themselves.
Can UV DTF be used to personalize the fan ribs?
Yes. UV DTF was used to apply custom names and personalized impressions directly to the front fan ribs in this documented project.
How do you keep personalized fans and cases matched?
Each personalized fan was individually matched to its corresponding personalized velvet bag as part of the quality control process before delivery.
Do you need to test decoration methods before printing a full run?
For less common products or substrates, testing on the actual item before committing to a full production run can help confirm the finished result before scaling up.
Can custom clack fans be personalized for individual guests?
Yes. In this project, individual names or personalized impressions were applied to the fan ribs using UV DTF, with each fan matched to its own bag.
What tools are needed to reapply the fan fabric to the ribs?
In the documented process, fabric tape was used to reattach the decorated polyester material to the fan ribs after decoration and trimming.
