DTF Transfer Instructions

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are heat-pressed onto fabric using a commercial heat press. Our transfers are produced in-house in Orlando using OEKO-TEX certified film, hot-melt adhesive powder, and OEM ECO PASSPORT certified inks — meaning the materials are tested for safety and built for real-world wear and washing.

Recommended Press Settings

The following settings are based on our experience pressing in-house. Results may vary depending on your press model, platen condition, and the specific blank manufacturer. We always recommend testing on a sample before a full production run.

Dye Migration Note: Some polyester and triblend garments may experience dye migration depending on the blank manufacturer's dye process. Our adhesive powder includes dye-blocking properties, but no DTF system can fully eliminate migration across every fabric manufacturer. If color bleeding is a concern, test on a sample first and check with your blank supplier about their dye process.

Step-by-Step DTF Application

  1. Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. A flat, dry surface gives the adhesive the best chance to bond fully.
  2. Position your transfer face-down on the garment. Make sure the design is aligned before pressing — once heat is applied, repositioning is not possible.
  3. Press at your fabric's recommended temperature and time with heavy, even pressure. Refer to the settings table above.
  4. Allow to cool before peeling. Our film is All-Peel, meaning it can be peeled hot or cold. Cold peel is recommended for the most consistent finish, especially on detailed designs with fine lines or small text.
  5. Post-press with a Teflon sheet for 5–10 seconds to smooth the finish and improve wash durability. This step is worth the extra few seconds.

All-Peel Film — Hot Peel vs Cold Peel

Our DTF transfers use All-Peel film, which gives you the flexibility to peel hot or cold depending on your workflow and press settings.

Cold peel allows the adhesive to fully settle into the fabric fibers before the film releases. We find this produces the most consistent finish across complex artwork, fine lines, and color knockouts.

Hot peel lets you pull the film immediately after pressing. When your settings are properly dialed in, even detailed artwork releases cleanly. Just because the film is All-Peel does not mean you should rush every job — especially on intricate designs.

Commercial Heat Press vs Cricut EasyPress

We always recommend a commercial heat press for DTF transfers. DTF requires consistent, heavy, even pressure across the full platen — something commercial presses are engineered to deliver reliably on every press.

A Cricut EasyPress can work in a pinch, but pressure with the EasyPress depends entirely on how much physical weight the user applies by hand. This makes pressure inconsistent, which can result in partial adhesion, lifting edges, or uneven finish — particularly on larger designs.

Cricut EasyPress tip: If a commercial press is not available, press in sections, apply as much downward weight as possible, and always do a test press before committing to your final garment. Results will vary more than with a commercial press.

UV DTF Application Instructions

UV DTF (UV Direct-to-Film) transfers adhere to hard, smooth, non-porous surfaces without heat. No heat press required. No weeding. No layering. The application process is straightforward, but surface preparation makes the difference between a transfer that lasts and one that lifts.

UV DTF will not adhere properly to matte, porous, silicone, or rubberized surfaces. If the surface is not smooth and non-porous, the transfer will lift or fail. When in doubt, test on a small area first.

Step-by-Step UV DTF Application

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. Remove any oils, fingerprints, dust, or debris. This is the most important step — any contamination under the transfer will cause it to lift.
  2. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the transfer. Do not touch the cleaned area with bare hands.
  3. Slowly separate the AB film backing from the transfer, peeling carefully and evenly to avoid distorting the design.
  4. Position the transfer on the surface and apply firm, even pressure across the entire design using your fingers or a squeegee tool. Work from the center outward to push out any air.
  5. Slowly peel the top carrier film back at a low angle, keeping the film close to the surface as you pull. If any part of the design lifts with the film, press it back down and apply more pressure before continuing.
  6. Run your fingers across the finished design to ensure all edges are fully adhered and the transfer is flat against the surface.

Pro tip: No heat press required for UV DTF. If you are used to DTF on apparel, resist the urge to apply heat — UV DTF adhesion is pressure-based, not heat-activated.

Care Instructions

UV DTF hard goods are hand wash only. Dishwasher heat and detergent pressure will degrade the transfer adhesion over time. Microwave and oven exposure can cause transfer failure and may damage the substrate.

These are tested baselines — always do a sample press first, as results can vary based on your press model, platen accuracy, and the specific blank you are using.

Do I need a commercial heat press for DTF transfers?

Yes, we recommend a commercial heat press. DTF transfers require consistent, heavy, even pressure across the full design. Commercial presses are engineered to deliver this reliably on every press. Consumer and semi-pro presses can produce inconsistent results, particularly on larger designs or specialty fabrics.

Can I use a Cricut EasyPress for DTF transfers?

A Cricut EasyPress can work in a pinch, but it is not our recommended tool for DTF. Pressure with the EasyPress depends on how much physical weight the user applies by hand, making it difficult to achieve the consistent heavy pressure DTF requires. Should I hot peel or cold peel DTF transfers?

Our DTF film is All-Peel, meaning it supports both methods. Cold peel is generally the safer choice, especially for detailed artwork with fine lines or small text, because it allows the adhesive to fully settle into the fabric before releasing. Hot peel is fine when your press settings are dialed in and you are comfortable with the workflow. Just because the film is All-Peel does not mean rushing every job is advisable.

Why is my DTF transfer peeling or not adhering?

The most common causes are insufficient pressure, skipping the pre-press, or pressing at the wrong temperature for the fabric type. If edges are lifting after washing, the post-press step with a Teflon sheet was likely skipped. If the transfer never fully adhered during pressing, check that your platen pressure is set to heavy and that the fabric was dry before pressing.

Can DTF transfers work on polyester?

Yes. We have found best results on polyester around 270–290°F with heavy pressure. Keep in mind that some polyester garments may experience dye migration depending on the blank manufacturer's dye process. Our adhesive powder includes dye-blocking properties, but migration cannot be fully eliminated across all polyester blanks. Testing on a sample first is always advisable.

Can DTF transfers work on nylon?

Yes, but nylon is a heat-sensitive material that requires lower press temperatures, generally in the 250–270°F range. Always test on a sample piece first and monitor closely for scorching or fabric distortion. Pressure should still be heavy even at lower temperatures.

Can DTF transfers work on leather or faux leather?

DTF can adhere to leather and faux leather, but these materials have real limitations with heat press exposure. Scorch marks and surface damage are possible depending on the material composition and press temperature. We strongly advise testing on a scrap piece before pressing a finished leather item. Results will vary significantly based on the specific material.

Why do polyester garments sometimes experience dye migration through DTF?

Dye migration occurs when the dyes used in polyester fabric are activated by heat and move upward through the transfer layer, shifting or discoloring the design. The likelihood depends entirely on the blank manufacturer's dye process. Our adhesive powder includes dye-blocking agents, but because dye processes vary widely across manufacturers, we cannot guarantee full migration prevention on every blank. Testing before production is the most reliable way to identify at-risk garments.

What surfaces work best for UV DTF transfers?

UV DTF transfers adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces including glass, metal, acrylic, coated plastic, tumblers, mugs, pens, and similar hard goods. The surface must be free of oils and debris, so cleaning with isopropyl alcohol before application is essential.

What surfaces should I avoid with UV DTF transfers?

UV DTF transfers will not adhere properly to matte finishes, porous materials, silicone, rubberized coatings, uncoated wood, or fabric. If the surface is textured, absorbent, or has a non-smooth finish, the transfer will lift or fail to bond. When in doubt, test on a small area first.

Can UV DTF transfers go in the dishwasher?

No. UV DTF hard goods are hand wash only. Dishwasher heat cycles and high-pressure water jets will degrade the transfer adhesion over time and can cause the design to lift or peel. Hand washing with mild soap and cool water is the only recommended cleaning method.

Do UV DTF transfers require heat to apply?

No. UV DTF transfers are pressure-activated, not heat-activated. No heat press is required. Application is done by hand — clean the surface, peel the backing, position, apply firm pressure, and remove the carrier film. Heat will not improve adhesion and may damage the substrate.

How do I care for custom DTF apparel?

Machine wash cold inside out, tumble dry on low heat, do not bleach, do not iron directly over the design, and do not use fabric softener. Fabric softener breaks down the adhesive bond over repeated washes and is one of the most common causes of premature transfer wear.

How do I care for UV DTF hard goods?

Hand wash only with mild soap and cool water. Do not place in a dishwasher, microwave, oven, or freezer. Do not expose to boiling water or stovetop heat. Extreme temperatures in any direction can weaken the transfer bond and cause lifting or design failure.

Why does my DTF transfer film look like it is separating before I press it?

This is called delamination, and it can happen when the carrier film absorbs small amounts of moisture from humidity before pressing. In Orlando's climate, this is not uncommon. In most cases, the transfer is still usable if the printed layer is intact and properly aligned. Once heat and pressure are applied, the adhesive activates and bonds to the garment.
